Construction on the much anticipated Wekiva Parkway begins in early 2013, but before it does, perhaps as many a 125 gopher tortoises are being relocated. Scientists began the careful work in late December, which is expected to extend into January. The Wekiva Parkway will travel through ecologically sensitive areas, and much work has been done to make the project environmentally friendly. The 25 mile toll road completes a beltway around the Orlando metro area, and is a joint effort between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA). The project is expected to create jobs, provide an economic boost to the area and ease congestion.
