Nearly 500,000 motorcycle riders in Daytona for Bike Week mean a lot of tourism and need for increased safety awareness on Florida roads. FDOT held a press conference along with Florida Highway Patrol officials to educate and promote the safety message, encouraging motorcycle riders to ride responsibly by not drinking and riding and wearing highly visible colors. They also asked other motorists to be more aware and watch for motorcycles during the popular event.
FDOT also advertised at area gas stations and hang out spots. The Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition had a booth and a team of members working at Bike Week promoting motorcycle safety as part of educational efforts. The coalition members were taking surveys to help with the motorcycle safety program and issued bright-colored T-shirts and bags encouraging motorcyclists to wear bright colors to help other motorists see them. They were also dispersing educational materials warning of the dangers of drinking and riding and also dangers of not wearing protective gear.
