FDOT District Four has implemented a pilot program to help motorists find their way through major, multi-level interchanges in southwest Broward County. Large pre-formed, thermo-plastic decals that resemble the highway shields have been applied to the pavement in the I-595/I-75/Sawgrass Expressway in the Sunrise-Weston area. The decals were placed on the roadway to supplement existing overhead and shoulder-mounted directional signs. They are expected to last at least five years. The shields were approved by the Federal Highway Administration. The markings have been used on I-4 in Orlando and elsewhere around the country, but this is their first use in South Florida.
