Cross-Ocean Bridge Forum at Kinmen Island

Jim Jacobsen, District Seven Structures Maintenance Engineer, recently visited Taiwan for a bridge forum where he presented on the topic of “Inspection and Maintenance of Bridges in Marine Environments.”  The government of Kinmen Island is just starting construction of a bridge similar to the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge.  Jim’s presentation focused on the specific inspection access and maintenance challenges for a large segmental cable-stayed bridge over salt water.

The purpose of the forum was to bring together engineers and professors with experience with the type of bridge they are building to connect Big Kinmen and Little Kinmen Islands off the coast of mainland China.  These islands are part of Taiwan but they have no bridges between them.  The presenters came from various places including Japan, Hong Kong, California, Florida, and mainland China.  Jim had a wonderful trip and met many diverse people.
