This month the Florida Department of Transportation took home two first place awards at the 2013 TransComm conference for transportation communication. The first was won by District Five in the Public Awareness Events division under the Special Events category. The award covered the SunRail rail safety campaign that was rolled out this past spring for Train Safety Awareness Week. The campaign included teaming up with Radio Disney to get the word out on the air waves and at a major event in Central Florida in May. The SunRail team also came up with the “TRAIN!” theme to communicate the need to stay alert and alive, and it coordinated efforts with Operation Lifesaver. SunRail will begin commuter rail service next spring on 32 miles of rail line in the Metro Orlando area.
The second award was for the FDOT employee newsletter in the Internal Newsletter division under the Print & Electronic Publications category. Every month, Public Information officers from each district submit stories and photos to be compiled and distributed to all FDOT employees. (Contact your local PIO if you’d like to submit a feature!) Over the past year, the new two-part format has included an email preview and an online component that serves as an indexed archive and photo gallery.
