CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. It also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers and increase their mobility in the community.
Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their safety belts and are less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are also more likely to be seriously injured in a crash due to their greater fragility. A proper car fitting can greatly increase both the driver’s safety and the safety of others.
At a CarFit event, like the one held at the Wakulla County Senior Center in October, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. Approximately 30 drivers came through the CarFit event put on by the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition in Wakulla County.
