Yemile Hernandez, the Office of General Counsel Support (OGC) Staff Employee of the Year, is a Florida Bar certified paralegal who has served the Department of Transportation District Seven OGC for almost 10 years. Yemile volunteered to assist the District One OGC when they were shorthanded (making trips to Bartow several times a week to help process incoming cases for Districts One, Five, and Seven) and to train a new paralegal. She also used that opportunity to compare procedures and suggest best practices to increase consistency, predictability, and repeatability. Subsequently, Yemile developed expertise in the newly implemented court e-filing procedures for various jurisdictions and coordinated District Seven OGC and Right of Way staff activities necessary to handle an increased caseload arising from several new projects.
Andy DeNering is an eminent domain litigator in District One. This year, he put in many overtime hours to prepare a heavy case load. He handled 34 eminent domain cases including 11 mediations, 12 Orders of Taking hearings, and had two week long back-to-back trials in Okeechobee County this spring. This year he also handled cases for Districts Seven and Five. Throughout the year, he helped train and assist other DOT eminent domain litigators. Andy has demonstrated the heart of a good public servant and is well respected by the client for both his knowledge and professionalism. District One staff appreciates Andy not only for his collegial attitude and good nature, but also for his willingness to help whenever there is need.
