Turnpike motorists in southern Broward County are experiencing easier commutes when exiting at the Hollywood/Pines Boulevard interchange (Exit 49).
A new SunPass-only exit ramp opened to traffic the morning of June 23 for southbound Turnpike motorists headed west on Hollywood/Pines Boulevard.
The new SunPass-only ramp will help lessen congestion by reducing the number of vehicles driving through the existing toll plaza on the south side of the interchange. It is projected that more than 5,000 vehicles a day will bypass the toll plaza and use the new ramp.
The new ramp is part of a larger project that replaced the Golden Glades toll plaza in Miami with all-electronic toll gantries. Work also includes widening the ramp that connects the northbound Turnpike Extension to the northbound Turnpike in Miramar.
Construction began in August 2012. It is anticipated the $19.9 project will be completed by the end of 2014.
