Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the state arrived at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando on June 27, 2014 for the annual Florida Law Enforcement Challenge awards ceremony hosted by FDOT. This year’s event was one of the largest to date with hundreds of law enforcement agencies participating in the Florida Motor Unit Challenge, Florida DUI Challenge, Florida Click It or Ticket Challenge, and the Florida Law Enforcement Challenge programs. The prizes included a fully equipped 2014 Harley Davidson Police Motor Cycle, 2014 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT.
This year’s Traffic Officer of the Year was Officer Chris Nagel of the West Palm Beach Police Department. Other winners included the St Petersburg Police Department, the Greenacres Police Department, and the Astatula Police Department.
The grand finale of the ceremony was the Florida Law Enforcement Challenge awards presentation. This challenge allows law enforcement agencies of like patrol officer size to compete against each other for their overall traffic education and enforcement program. Each agency that placed in its category was awarded traffic safety equipment for use in education and enforcement within their community. The first place winner in each category was allowed to draw a key from a bowl and attempt to start the 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT to be used solely for traffic enforcement. The winning agency was the Tallahassee Police Department.
