The 15-mile Veterans Expressway (Toll 589) took one step closer to becoming a cashless, all-electronic highway when the southern-most portion of the highway eliminated cash toll collection on June 14.
The ramps at Hillsborough Avenue, Waters Avenue and the Anderson Road toll plaza all converted overnight. The next section, due to be complete by Labor Day, includes the Wilsky Boulevard, Hutchison and Ehrlich Road Ramps, and the Sugarwood mainline toll plaza. The Anderson Road ramps remain under reconstruction and are due open in the fall.
The conversion to all-electronic tolling is part of a larger, $360 million project that adds additional lane capacity to the Veterans. The project also includes one Express Lane in each direction between Memorial Highway and the Dale Mabry Spur.
More than 150,000 motorists travel the Veterans Expressway each day, and it is an important link in greater Tampa Bay’s transportation network.
