In 1915, the Florida legislature approved and formed the Florida State Road Department, the precursor to the Florida Department of Transportation, and set in motion a wave of transportation innovation, mobility, and economic development. In 2015, FDOT celebrates its 100th anniversary!
The Florida Department of Transportation oversees Florida’s waterways, seaports, highways, rail, aviation systems, public transit systems and spaceports (see these Fast Facts for more details), but our legacy extends beyond.
- Did you know that the precursor to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles was originally housed within the State Road Department?
- Did you know that in 1965 Tampa International Airport added a single 8,300 foot runway to usher in the jet age?
- Did you know that the Tamiami Trail construction was started by a million dollar investment by a private citizen?
