FDOT District Six continued its safety outreach for distracted driving by participating in two major events in Miami-Dade County. On April 2, FDOT and Miami-Dade County Police joined forces at the Miami-Dade College annual “Be A Kid Again” event at their homestead campus. This event promoted healthy habits and general safety to college students. FDOT’s Put it Down distracted driving awareness campaign materials were distributed to over 300 students. Students also had an opportunity to test their skills with Miami-Dade County Police Department’s distracted driving computer simulator.
On April 14, FDOT District Six’s Northeast Community Traffic Safety Team conducted a successful multi-agency educational and enforcement operation that took place at the following Miami-Dade County municipalities: Hialeah Gardens, Medley, West Miami, and Coral Gables. This operation focused on the dangers of red-light running, speeding, safety belt use, impaired and distracted driving, move-over law compliance, drivers’ license and insurance compliance, and general traffic safety. Special emphasis was made on educational and enforcement for bicycle and pedestrian safety outreach at selected locations around West Miami and Coral Gables, as part of FDOT’s Alert Today Alive Tomorrow bicycle and pedestrian safety initiative. The event yielded 276 citations (which were issued in less than five hours), and over 50 educational/promotional items were distributed to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
