On Monday, June 22, 2015, the Florida Department of Transportation hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the sidewalk improvement project along SR 823/NW 57 Avenue from NW 202 Street/Honey Hill Drive to Florida’s Turnpike ramps.
The ceremony was led by FDOT’s Director of Transportation Development, Herold Desdunes, who spoke about the importance of pedestrian safety and how this project contributes towards improving it. Also in attendance was Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan, who played an important role in the execution of this project.
Commissioner Jordan emphasized the importance of the surrounding community members’ support, and how that support, along with FDOT’s efforts, made this project possible. As a result of the partnerships, the design stage for this project began in October 2010 and was completed in April 2015. After extensive coordination with multiple agencies and stakeholders, construction finally began in December 2014.
This sidewalk improvement project added approximately 1.1 miles of a six-foot sidewalk along the east side of NW 57 Avenue/Red Road. Also included as part of this project was repaving and restriping of the roadway, as well as additional drainage to accommodate the sidewalk for the section between the Florida’s Turnpike ramps.
Completion of this project means a better quality of life for the surrounding community and those who commute through the area, and is a key example of the work the Florida Department of Transportation is doing to improve the safety of not only motorists, but pedestrians as well.
