Federal Grant Extends SunRail Service

September 28 was a big day for SunRail as the Federal Transit Administration announced the signing of a federal grant agreement to extend SunRail commuter rail service 17.2 miles from southern Orlando to Osceola County.  District Five Secretary Noranne Downs joined federal, state, and local partners in downtown Kissimmee at the site of the future SunRail station. The Full Funding Grant Agreement commits $93.4 million in funding from the federal government and represents roughly half of the project’s $186.9 million estimated total cost. The remaining costs are covered by the State of Florida (25%) and Orange and Osceola counties (25%). Estimates show the new extended line will provide approximately 2,000 daily linked trips when the extension opens. Late 2017 is the goal. The project will include four new commuter rail stations including Meadow Woods in Orange County, Osceola Parkway, Kissimmee Amtrak, and Poinciana in Osceola County.
