On February 17, Alert Today Florida hosted its second annual “Champions Ride for Bicycle Safety.” Approximately 40 avid cyclists, who also happen to be very well known celebrities, came out to ride and show their support for the cause. The common theme on this 60+ mile ride? Humanizing the bike.
Too often drivers forget that PEOPLE are riding bicycles and instead treat them like objects that are in their way. Celebrities like Jimmie Johnson, Trevor Bayne, Christian Vande Velde, and Dario Francitti helped spread the message that it could be anyone on that bike. Your friend, neighbor, family member, or yes, even a famous NASCAR driver.
In Florida, bicycles have all the rights and responsibilities of other road users. They are often drivers, just like you and I are. The bike just happens to be their vehicle of choice at the moment.
So the next time you see a cyclist along your route, move over, give them space. Treat them like they belong there, because in fact, they do!
