The Florida Scenic Highways Program is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Through the program, FDOT partners with local communities to encourage grassroots efforts to protect, preserve, and enhance community’s resources. The collection of scenic highways includes 25 designated byways that cover over 1,500 miles of Florida roads. The Town of Penney Farms in Clay County recently celebrated its 90th anniversary in part by conducting their 2nd Annual Penney Farms Historic 5K Run. The race course included the tree-lined residential streets of the J.C. Penney Memorial Scenic Highway.
Those who participated in the run enjoyed a quiet picturesque route, great home-baked munchies at the finish line and super prizes. The race was a smashing success with participant numbers more than double from last year’s event. Proceeds from the race help support the efforts of the J.C. Penney Memorial Scenic Highway volunteers in their efforts to enhance the scenic, historic and cultural resources of their byway while promoting tourist activities and supporting the local economy.
